MANILA – The government is rolling out the Bagong Pilipinas Barangay Presidential Scholars Program, a barangay-based educational assistance initiative under the Bawat Barangay Makikinabang program, which aims to benefit more than 200,000 college students nationwide.
Under the program, each barangay may select five Presidential Scholars, with each scholar receiving a one-time educational assistance of PHP20,000, intended to help students cover tuition balance, school supplies, transportation, daily allowance, and other school-related expenses.

With around 42,000 barangays nationwide, the program has the potential to reach over 200,000 college students across the country.
Priority will be given to incoming fourth-year college students for SY 2026-2027 who are residents of the barangay where they are applying, come from vulnerable households, or are at risk of dropping out. Priority may also be given to families with no member who has completed tertiary education.
In the absence of qualified fourth-year applicants, some barangays may also consider incoming third-year college students, TESDA scholars with National Certificates, and students in their fifth or sixth year who are expected to graduate in SY 2026-2027.

In Tacloban City, for instance, the program may benefit around 690 Presidential Scholars across its 138 barangays. Under its implementation, PHP100,000 per barangay is allocated for public service projects and PHP100,000 for scholarship assistance.
Since the program is barangay-based, application requirements and selection guidelines may vary by location. Students are encouraged to coordinate directly with their barangay office to check eligibility, confirm if applications are already open, and wait for official guidelines before submitting any documents.
Students are also advised to submit applications only through official barangay or government offices and to avoid sending personal documents to unofficial pages or unknown individuals. (GOVPH)
